A Guide to choosing your location & outfit for a Perfect Engagement Session
So you just got engaged, and you are having trouble choosing your location & outfit for a perfect engagement session. No worries, today I will cover some tips to help your engagement session look and be fabulous.
Location, Location, Location
Every girl wants that perfect fairy tale location. The one where all of your friends are going to swoon over when they see it, but not everyone lives near the Eiffel Tower. But I am here to tell you that the right photographer can make any location look wonderful. But how to choose???
Tip 1: Is this us? Find a location that fits your love story. And engagement session isn't about your location, it is about your love. So find some where that both of you love. Maybe camping is your thing? Do your session in the woods. Maybe you love watching movies at the Saenger, and coffee at the local coffee shop. Downtown would be perfect location for you. Make your friends swoon with how in love you guys are with each other that you make anywhere magical!!
Tip 2: Does it Flow? Make sure your location flows. Your engagement session should be telling your love story, not just photos with you in random places. Really put thought into the flow of your engagement session. Make sure your locations all make sense together. Taking photos by a fence in the middle of the woods, and then going to a modern coffee house, doesn't really flow together and tell a story. But taking photos at your favorite local coffee shop, then walking to the nearby theater you love, and finishing the session off with ice cream at your favorite downtown shop tells a story of a normal intimate afternoon that would probably take place between you and your love!
Tip 3: To Prop or Not? Choose props for your session or location that make sense and fit in with your session. You don't have to even have props, but if you do make sure your props fit your location, and mean something to you. These are photos you will have for years to come, make them meaningful!
I have nothing to wear!!
This is one of the biggest dilemas of engagement photos! But never fret it is so much easier than you think to choose the perfect outfit for your engagement session.
Tip 1: Go Classic! Try to not wear outfits that are "trendy." No one wants to look back on their engagement photos 10 years from now and think...OMG why did I wear that crop top! These are going to be photos you want to display on your walls, send out to relatives, and show your children and grandchildren 50 years from now...wear something classic! That way when you look back on your photos you don't cringe at your outfit!
Tip 2: Be Simple! Remember this session is about the love you two have for each other, not how many bangles you wore. Keep it simple when it comes to your jewelry and makeup. No one wants to look like Mimi off the Drew Carey Show in their engagements (want a good laugh...google her.) Also you don't want to have so much bling on that it distracts from your ring, and all you notice is your jewelry. Choose a few pieces that you love like a pair or earrings or your favorite statement necklace, and
Tip 3: Match! And by match I don't mean you and your fiance. Yes wear colors that compliment each other, but make sure your outfit matches your location. Wearing a pair of Louis Vuitton's heels in the middle of a field, don't exactly go together. Just like overalls don't go with the downtown setting. Try to make sure your outfits and style go with your location.
Tip 4: Be Comfortable! Don't choose outfits that are uncomfortable!!! The more uncomfortable you feel, the more uncomfortable you look. So don't wear that dress that the straps won't stay up and you have to adjust every 5 seconds. You will be so worried about the dress, that you won't be able to focus on your photos! Plus you want these to be authentic, if you wouldn't wear that outfit normally, don't wear it for your engagement photos (unless they are completely styled to fit a certain theme.)
Tip 5: Make sure your outfit is you! So your girlfriend had engagement photos taken and wore this beautiful dress with a plunging neckline. It looked great on her, but you wouldn't normally wear that...then don't wear that! Wear something that fits your style and is a representation of you!! You want these to be authentic, if you wouldn't wear that outfit normally, don't wear it for your engagement photos (unless they are completely styled to fit a certain theme.)
And remember.....Don't over Pinterest! I know Pinterest is all the rage for brides, but don't get so lost in pinterest that your entire session becomes taken over by pinspiration. Make your session unique! Remember you hired a photographer you trust. Let them guide you into natural beautiful poses that are unique to you and your love. Remember this is about the love you two have for each other. Not the love others have for each other.
